Lecce Groundsman Killed By Lightning

Tragedy has struck Italian football after a Lecce groundsman was killed by a bolt of lighting today.

The Serie B squad had been involved in training when a sudden storm forced them to take shelter in the dressing room.

Antonio De Giorgi had remained outside to collect all the training equipment when he was freakishly struck.

Ambulance and paramedics immediately arrived onto the scene but were unable to revive the 42-year-old.

He leaves a wife and a son behind him and Lecce are now set to ask for their match with Cesena to be postponed.

It has not been confirmed yet but it is also likely that there will be a minute silence during all fixtures in the Italian league this Saturday and Sunday.

I've watched a couple serie b games this year and I gotta say they play some good soccer. I mean I watched it all last year so I knew they played good soccer, but I thought a huge part of that was because juve, napoli, and genoa were in it. It's pretty entertaining. Definitely better than the soccer Milan play, eh vtec?

Anyways here are the standings after 12 games. Pisa is a pretty huge shock seeing as how they finished 3rd last year in serie c, I think.

No, its not possible to tab in a forum, at least not to my knowledge.

Who knows or is familiar with Albinoleffe? They're in second now and are going strong, looks like they're in line for promotion. They've come from nowhere. Have they got much of a fanbase?

Anyway, I would like to see Bologna get back up to Serie A.

albinloffe have really suprised me. they have been a mid table serie b side for years and never have really performed strongly. they seem to have gotten their act together this season and it shows.
i'd like to see messina back in serie a lol, but that wont be for a while :(

Two games left in the Cadetti to decide which three side will be making the jump to the big league (incidentally, does anyone know how much Serie B teams get for gaining promotion? I read somewhere that sides in the english Nationwide-coca-mcdonalds-axa-cola-football-league-Championship or whatever the fuck its called get something like £60m for achieving promotion to the EPL). Chievo are more or less promoted and will probably finish as champions (taking probably Juve's last major honor in the process), with Bologna clinging onto second and Lecce, Albinoleffe, Brescia and Pisa are all still in with a shout through the play-offs.

Serie B Table:
1) Chievo 83
2) Bologna 78
------------------------
3) Lecce 77
4) Albinoleffe 77
5) Brescia 70
6) Pisa 68

Remaining fixtures:

Week 41, 25/5/08
Albinoleffe - Rimini
Bari - Avellino
Brescia - Frosinone
Cesena - Piacenza
Grosseto - Chievo
Mantova - Bologna
Messina - Lecce
Modena - Ascoli
Pisa - Spezia
Triestina - Treviso
Vicenza - Ravenna

Week 42, 1/6/08
Ascoli - Triestina
Avellino - Brescia
Bologna - Pisa
Chievo - Bari
Frosinone - Albinoleffe
Lecce - Vicenza
Piacenza - Mantova
Ravenna - Cesena
Rimini - Messina
Spezia - Grosseto
Treviso - Modena

Great to see Bologna back in the big time. Always thought them to a good club with some very nice players down through the years, and it'll be good to see 35,000+ in the Dall'Ara next season.

well you won't be seeing much of messina anymore, since they've been relegated to serie D because of financial issues.

It was definately better off with Messina in it. No Napoli, no Bologna, no Genoa... classic teams. Better that they are in Serie A though. I think Serie A is the best league in the world again.
